People, I am a dork on a mission. The mission is yet unclear, but I could use some tips.

To you various artist-y people on my flist: is there anything it's imperative I know about using charcoal? And about drawing male bodies that actually have muscles, unlike the skinny bastards I usually draw? *cough*

Anyways, yeah. Wassup?

Also, the other day in socials, we watched this animated short movie called The Man Who Planted Trees, and I thought it was really cool. If you guys haven't seen it, I'd totally poke you to go find it. It's older, 1987 or so, and it's not really for entertainment value, but I thought it was nifty anyhow. I recommend it. =)

Dentist's appointment now. Ciao.

I have no tips because my mediums are always digital. Good luck with that.

But I love that movie. The art is just so gorgeous and the story is so quiet. It won a lot of awards way back when. I watched it in French though so I dunno what you thought about the narration. But definitely a must see Canadian short.

I really like the narration in English too. Especially the bit where he talked about the villages, with descent to madness and suicide/murder cases. I was totally drawn in.

*kicks your ass onto AIM when you return from the dentists* XD

Charcoal is so evil to work with mess wise. I'd just say keep washing your hands and that or else you end up making smears on the paper. Other than that I haven't been too successful with it so I can't offer any other advice.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. XD;; I've talked to you on AIM already.

I'm thinking I should probably avoid it for this project, with all I've heard about the mess, because I was planning on doing this on a long piece of paper on the white wall of my dorm room... Which doesn't belong to me, and would probably be hell to clean. XD;;; Ah well. It'll be a test of my patience: drawing a 1:1 scale 6'2" man entirely in pencil. Bahaha.

I say that charcoal is a difficult medium because most people don't know how to use it properly. The instinct is to smooth it down but the medium is all about contrast and building tones so work on really dark darks and light lights instead of going for a medium gray tone. It looks much better that way.

And um, it's hard to describe exactly what to do about drawing the male body without going into essay mode but basically: DRAW FROM LIFE. If you can find good pictures, fine, but if you can, draw as much as you can that you can see with your own eyes. You'll find a lot of different sorts of bodies and learn how to draw 'em. :3
Also a good idea is to learn the muscles that lay underneath the skin because you gotta know how those fit together and move in order to draw them with skin on top and make it look real and nice. It's a lot of work but it does help with understanding how to draw them.

I got anatomy books from the library, and conned a friend into sitting for me. :3 A start on both things you mentioned, yesyes.

I'll keep the thing with the lights and darks in mind. Contrast is sexy.

Thank you.

How do you do? x3

I don't really have tips, other than learn the difference between figures and planes, and then use that knowledge for goooood. When using charcoal, know that it washes off-- but not that easily. :D Ahahaha. I hate the sound charcoal makes. It makes me shiver. D,:

Keep your marks in mind and make them effectively.

You sound like a zen master, or so. It's so great. X3 "You will be epic, but the road will be harder than a diamond dildo. DUNDUNDUN."

...Or not. =D

Thank you.
